![]() ![]() Wasteland 's game mechanics are based on those used in the tabletop role-playing games, such as Tunnels and Trolls and Mercenaries, Spies and Private Eyes created by Wasteland designers Ken St. A remastered version of the game titled Wasteland Remastered was released on February 25, 2020, in honor of the original game's 30th anniversary.Ī screenshot of an encounter with mutated "Drools" in the DOS version inXile Entertainment released a sequel, Wasteland 2, in 2014, and Wasteland 3 was released in 2020. The game's general setting and concept became the basis for Interplay's 1997 role-playing video game Fallout and the Fallout series. It was re-released for Microsoft Windows, OS X, and Linux in 2013 via Steam and GOG.com, and in 2014 via Desura.Ĭritically acclaimed and commercially successful, Wasteland was intended to be followed by two separate sequels, but Electronic Arts dropped claims of Fountain of Dreams being a sequel and Interplay's Meantime was canceled. Developers originally made the game for the Apple II and it was ported to the Commodore 64 and MS-DOS. ![]() The game is set in a futuristic, post-apocalyptic America destroyed by a nuclear holocaust generations before. Just remember that it's IJKL not WASD.Wasteland is a science fiction open world role-playing video game developed by Interplay and published by Electronic Arts in 1988. Then if you're really itching for old school, go C64. I'd recommend the old school dos version, but that's pretty much unavailable outside of abandonware sites, and many of those took it down when the original classic version was released since it wasn't abandoned anymore. experience, then go to the "original classic" version (with the uprezzed graphics turned off). The game is still unforgiving, but you're less likely to fight with the UI while getting in the right headspace.įor a brand new player (especially one not used to 80s RPGs), I would say play the remaster. The remaster sands off some of those edges and is probably a friendlier experience for the new player. But, NG+ is post game, and super loot is essentially cheating, so their absence has minimal impact if you're just trying to see where it all started.Īlso, it's worth keeping in mind that the UI is 32 years old, so while it's extremely straight forward, it isn't necessarily intuitive to new players. There's a couple minor bugs and a couple features (NG+, super loot bag bug) aren't present. The graphics are much nicer, and there's a more modern save system (originals had a single save file that auto saved on screen transition the C64 would also save on death which meant starting over from the beginning).Īs much as I love it, the remaster isn't perfect. For someone new to the series, I would recommend the remaster by Krome, especially since they've added macros.įunctionally, the remaster is pretty much the same. I currently have four different copies on my computer: C64 through emulator, the 90s re-release for DOS through DOS Box, the "original classic" version through Steam and the remaster. From playing on the C64 back in 89, all the way up to the remaster. Keep hitting the Camp button and you'll be flying through the levels in no time! ![]() Everytime you move beside the window, you'll get a message that says you see men down below and are granted 400XP, IIRC. Use a rope to climb up and you'll be beside a window that looks into the hideout. Overall, it was a slow process for me to finish it but I greatly enjoyed that game, I look forward to diving into Wasteland 2 and 3 in the near future.įYI, if you wish to know a good way to farm XP and level up super quickly, there is an alleyway in Quartz, between Ugly John's hideout and an abandoned building. It felt true to the original, only looks prettier. Besides that, the game is still unforgiving on your squadmembers dying, still needing to pay attention to what people say since there is no waypoint or map marker for you, and skill checks are still necessary (like using a female ranger with a good Charisma check in the ladies bathroom of Scott's bar in Quartz). Looking back at the original '88 version of the game, I'd say that to UI is somewhat different to the original and also the obviously visuals being updated for modern consoles. Hey, I've beaten the Remastered version of Wasteland 1 on Xbox! I wanted to start from the very beginning and work my way up to the latest entry.Ĭoming from someone who has never played any cRPGs, I needed a lot of hand-holding throughout the game and mainly relied on Lord Fenton's walk through on YouTube, as well as using a gaming website that has played it for extra tips. ![]()
